The idea of moving and living outside the US by many standards might be a novel or even impossible idea—Live outside the United States??  However, the world is full of change right now and no matter what generation we are from; one must recognize and embrace the fact that the world has changed from our comfort zone and we must look to the new, before unimagined, ideas around us.

A few years ago, during the real estate fiasco, when we all felt and actually WERE land barons; many people from the United States, Europe and Canada bought homes and moved to Costa Rica.  50,000 North Americans have moved to Costa Rica with 700,000 vacationers annually visiting there. I talk with people everyday (now) who have just purchased homes in Costa Rica either as a second home or as an investment.

Of the 79 million baby boomers now turning 65, most of us were planning retirement with a very different outcome than actually exists for us in the United States today.  The possibility of moving to the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in Central America could be a solution for those who refuse to live life with less than planned. Many baby boomers are now working, trying to replace monies lost recently and secure a better retirement than is on tap if they do not work.  I personally hate seeing an older person working in public.  I feel I should be serving them. (Still not seeing myself in those ranks) Some people find it useful to get themselves out of the house each day and find that time with other people brings them joy.  But, many health problems begin at around 60 if not already; so these older people are living a less than luxurious life and perhaps some find any kind of normal life unavailable, even lacking.

Costa Rica can offer another option.  The 50,000 American who have already moved found a land of beauty, and happy people with a life expectancy of 78 years instead of the 72 years expected in the states.  An average of 700,000 people a year visit Costa Rica as a favorite tourist destination.  In 1994, tourism passed coffee and bananas as the biggest industry in Costa Rica.  Costa Rica is relatively wealthy compared to other Latin America countries.

The new President, Laura Chinchilla, has vowed to make Costa Rica a First World country in less than 4 years.  In 1995, the United Nations acclaimed Costa Rica as the best quality of life in Latin America, 28^th in the world for life expectancy.  With this resurgence of interest, many find Costa Rica Real Estate “up and coming” and use the real estate as investment.

There is a community of North American retirees from the along with a large number of Europeans, as well, currently living in Costa Rica.  Costa Rica is a democratic nation, has low drug rate problems, higher literacy rates, cleaner water, a high rate of students in secondary school: which all rates better than other Latin American nations.

A Costa Rica lifestyle can be maintained depending on the amount of luxury a person expects.  Costa Rica has a high standard of living and perhaps is more expensive than other areas in Latin America; however, the purchasing power is greater there than in the U.S. or Canada AND without sacrificing security and lifestyle.  Costa Rica properties for sale offers a life of bargains compared to other places with the capital, San Joses’ prices being the lowest among any city in the world.  Real Estate in middle-class neighborhoods is substantially less than in the U.S.

Everyone appreciates Costa Rica for its “Pura Vida”, its sandy beaches, lush landscaping, expansive mountain ranges, bio-diversity and lively urban centers; with 25% of its land protected by the government.  San Jose boasts of contemporary theatres, museums, art galleries, concert halls and restaurants.
